Differentiated reading and writing classroom instruction Gr. 3-8

Jamestown Reading Navigator

This highly innovative program is targeted at middle school and high school students reading at least two levels below grade level. The program is designed to be used by all teachers, regardless of their training.

Jamestown Reading Navigator is an online and print-based program built upon the latest research in adolescent literacy, Reading Next. The online component of Jamestown Reading Navigator improves students’ comprehension by utilizing direct, explicit instruction and modeling of good reading practices. Students practice and apply these reading strategies and skills by reading highly engaging content, viewing interactive multimedia, and writing in response to reading. The print-based readings from the inTime magazines and the inClass Reader anthologies give students an opportunity to extend their learning beyond the computer and encourage collaborative or independent learning. Teachers can monitor student progress utilizing the
online Learner Management System where scores from formative and
summative assessments are recorded.

http://www.renlearn.com/starreading/overview/default.htm STAR Reading - 10 minute Assessment and Tracking, Gr. 1-12

Accelerated Reader is a pretty well known/well used product which supports
independent reading by tracking reading and testing comprehension. They have
quizzes on 100,000 books. There's a one time cost of $2,799 and then annual
fees of $1000 per 250 kids and $4 per kid after ( probably around $2500 per
year for us).

STAR Reading which is a computer adaptive reading test from gr. 1-12. It is
a 10 minutes test that provides norm referenced reading scores. There is a
one time school fee of $1499 and then an annual fee per student of $.39. It
can be given multiple times throughout the year with no additional cost.

ReadNow Power Up which is an intervention program for struggling readers in
gr. 5-9. This is a total program which includes books, workbooks, audio
support etc is similar to a Read 180. The one time 24 student classroom
costs $13,495 and then annual coasts are $39.95 per student. I imagine this
would be a program that would be used for a targetted group of kids..the 2
year below grade level students we have identified in each academy.
